Art Thomson
Instructor
Art Thomson has over 38 years of experience in the electric industry holding a variety of positions. He spent his career with Philadelphia Electric Company (currently PECO Energy) and served in many facets of the industry including Generation Operations, Transmission/Sub-Transmission Operations, and System Load Operations. Art was a member of the start-up team for the Eddystone Station #3 and #4 Unit Oil fired generators and #1 and #2 Units SO2 Scrubbers.
Art's experience provides him with an overall exposure to the elements of System Operations from many different perspectives. As Generator Operator, he performed routine or emergency start up of Coal and Oil fired units as well as the combustion turbine units, and switching of the transmission system as directed by the System Load Dispatcher. As Chief Operator, he was responsible for creating the blocking procedures at generating facilities and station high line yard. This required a thorough understanding of generation facilities and substations on the power grid and of how the automated protection schemes and systems operate. Art's role as System Load Dispatcher was to monitor operations of the Transmission System and Generation Facilities on a real-time basis. He was responsible for balancing the Generation and Load requirements of the System. He assisted in the formation and training of the Exelon Power Team, which is now responsible for the Generation Control and Transactions.
Outside of operations, Art served on a variety of committees including the Permit Manager Program and ABB Users Group. He served as the lead for System Operations Permit Manager Program and was selected as PECO Energy’s representative to the ABB Users Group. He was also the content owner of the System Operations web pages. Art earned an Associates Degree in General Studies from the Community College of Philadelphia.
