Emergency Operations: Thinking Our Way Through!

The class will be delivered over a 2-day period. The class is intended to expand beyond initial training in working through emergency situations. The participants will be required to utilize their knowledge of system operations and apply this knowledge in simulated scenarios that have been developed from real-time system events. The class will be a combination of lecture and group activities. The major portion of this class, however, will be comprised of small group exercises where the group members must work their way through operational situations. Some of the situations will involve the utilization of the Power Simulator system. The situations presented will deal with various system events that include:

  • loss of transmission or generation facilities

  • actual or near voltage collapse

  • transmission loading

  • cascading outages

The class is intended for System Operators who possess the basic knowledge of electric system operation and are familiar with elements of identification and mitigation of system emergencies. This group would include those who have completed the OES-NA Emergency Identification and Mitigation class or those operators who have more than 5 years experience operating on the electric system in system operations.
